I was playing a .25/.50 cash game the other night, lots of loose callers. Im dealt KK in middle position. One guy raises to $3 pre flop before me. I have a $20 stack here, and i push it all in. One guy calls, the original raiser folds. Cards are turned over, the one caller has 33 and Im happy. Flop is blank. Turn is a 3, im dead. I asked why he called with pocket 3s and he said he thought i had AK or AQ and would ALWAYS call with any low pair in that position.

I would never call an all in with 33 unless maybe im a large stack in a tourney and short stack pushes with no other callers. But in a cash game to call an all in with 33?

Thoughts on this...

After that hand i was now 0-14 on my last AA and KK. Its sick.

Generally not a loose strategy to go all-in with low pocket pairs pre-flop. You're only a 13-10 favorite against over cards, and a 4-1 underdog to high pocket pairs (so think of it this way... the next four times this guy calls you, you're taking his cash. Yes, I know it's 4-1 over the long run, but still, you made the right play). If the over-cards are suited, the chances are closer to 12-10 or 11-10. Basically, it's a gamble, and that player likes to gamble. That's why he's a loose player.

So yes, it was a terrible play and he got lucky (8% chance to hit trips on the next two cards after the flop turns up blank). Just keep playing with this guy, because, like I said, you'll make your money back x3.

yeh personally i would not of called with a low poacket pair i might call with 8-9's and higher but not lower. its to risky of a play to lose alot fo chips. like the other guy said he was an 8% chance to hit trips and u just got unlucky. i had AA'S and somebody called wiht 44 and he hit trips on the flop. its jus tplain luck. play wiht that guy alot if he calld like that ull mkae ur money back.

If you're in a tournament and it's not much of your stack, and you're sure it will be heads-up, I think it is a decent play. Other than that you're dominated, a little above a coinflip, or even behind to overcards (e.g. 5c5s to Th9h)

Id never call with a pocket pair unless a SS has pushed and its almost certain it will be heads up and most importantly - I can afford to lose the hand and still be above average stacked. Even if these conditions are met - I wouldnt call with anything lower than say 77 because you can be behind to suited connected overcards. Preferably Id be in the blinds too.

However, pushing with a small pocket pair (or similarly AK) is different because you have fold equity (I think thats the right term). Meaning that its your opponents who have to call and put themselves in a 50/50 situation.

Basically, your opponent made a mistake EVEN if you did have AK. At best hes a coinflip, at worst hes totally dominated.
